Description
1972 Ford Mustang Convertible
For the 1971-73 model years former GM executive Bunkie Knudson, now the leader of Ford's product design, wanted to take the Mustang into a bigger, heavier and more luxurious playing field. The idea was to cash in on the burgeoning large luxury coupe market; and not only did the Mustang grow, it also received styling cues which exaggerated both its length and weight. Throughout the years, the Mustang has truly been everything to everyone. It's spanned several pricing levels, performance levels it even shared DNA with the Ford Pinto during the mid-to-late 70s. Through it all, the car remained successful and nearly every early variation has found its place in the collector market. Right now, it's all about the pre-1971 cars, but the tide is rising for examples like this awesome 1972 Mustang Convertible.
With aggressive styling, an original 302ci V8 and lots of options on the order form, this convertible with a Mach 1 stripe kit job and trimmings, our consignment comes at the right time. With the pre 1970's Mustangs taking off right now, these will be next, so you can get the aggressive styling, bigger car, and more power early into the game. This car had been carefully ordered to be just like a Mach 1 but in convertible form, a smart buyer.
Exterior
Medium Bright Yellow covers the straight steel surfaces with their well minded gaps on this classic. Two tones with a contrasting black rocker paint covers the bottom, and a Mach 1 stripe on both sides. All panels appear to be straight, and paint in good condition. With its wide stance, thin nose, single sport lamp headlights, wrap around trim, and iconic but smaller prancing horse on the honeycomb grille, they will definitely see you coming...in style. Dual Mach 1 hood scoops in black take the hood to a clear windscreen surrounded by polished aluminum trim. The new black power convertible top, with rear clear plastic window presents in like new condition and moves up and down effortlessly with a flick of a switch. Bringing up the rear is the short decklid and finally the vertical back, still maintaining the 3 taillight theme for the originals in 1964-1/2. The wheels on the car are 14-inch factory Magnum 500's, (not aftermarket), and are presented nicely all wrapped in raised white letter tires.
Interior
Black comfort woven insert and smooth black vinyl bolster high back bucket seats in front, and a bench seat in back provide comfortable seating for 4. Door panels are very nice white molded vinyl with a wood veneer accent streaking above the armrest. A very clean, angled dash in black as well, shows all the right things in all the right places as to the original configuration, with deep inset silver surrounds and plastic coverings. An AM/FM/single CD JVC radio and climate levers are in the center of the dash rising from the console. Starting off the console is a storage bin, then the factory T style shifter. All this within its own small plastic enclosed island. In front of the dash is a wood rimmed steering wheel. Black carpeting floods the floors and is in nice clean condition. A shout to the trunk with its gray speckled vinyl liner, and the plaid spare tire covering, along with a case of the jack and stand.
Drivetrain
302 cubes of V8 engine is installed and a single 2-barrel carburetor with a 3-speed C4 automatic transmission strapped to the rear. For the axle is a Ford 8-inch with 2.79 standard gears. All looking great under this hood and adding to this greatness are a new heater core, and master cylinder.
Undercarriage
Excepting some red primer panels for the underside of the trunk and rear wheel well panels all appears to be original and structurally sound. The hat channels, (sub frame), are solid as well. Independent coil springs for the front suspension and leaf springs for the back are also looking rust free. Power disc brakes are upfront and on back power drums. A clean Flowmaster exhaust is now installed and ends in back with shiny chrome tailpipes.
Drive-Ability
Sitting inside brought me back to 1972, when this car fired right up. The last of a dying breed in the muscle car thanks to the EPA regs. Nice acceleration on the test track, good handling, and bias free panic stopping. The AC works beautifully and blows ice cold, and all functions including the top up and down are flawless.
A very nice Mach 1 optioned, 72 Mustang convertible that is mechanically sound, like new original interior, resprayed exterior with the two tone paint. If hitting the highway in one of Detroit's final muscle cars sounds good to you, take a closer look at this killer '72 Mustang in convertible form. A real pony of a car.
