Description
1970 Ford Mustang Convertible
With the automakers, an impending doom was looming over their heads, that being the oil embargo. Ford was going to totally redesign the Mustang and market it as a fuel-efficient small car. But it had cars already in the line, parts needed to be used up, so the marketing of a basic Mustang to women and families as a sporty family car became the new mantra at Ford.
For consignment a 2 owner car that has all the fixin's of a Mach 1 with high back buckets, a tachometer in the dash, wood grain inserts, and the important 351ci 4V Cleveland with some liberties taken down the rebuild stage. Read on, and meanwhile I'll drop the top and get ready for a heart pounding test ride!
Exterior
A 76B body, that being a 2 door convertible, presents to us in Medium Red, and has a bit of bling with a stainless steel rocker cover. As the consigner stated all Mustangs have rust from day one, and he went to great extent to remediate all of it. This includes the replacement of the right quarter panel, tail panel, left quarter bottom, both doors and a new battery tray. No more tin worms for this car! A front chin spoiler is installed. A new high quality canvas convertible top with a rear glass window is now on, and it goes up and down with the flick of a switch. After these repairs, the car was primed and blocked 4 times then shipped to Elsmere, Delaware to be professionally painted by Hi Tech Auto Body which has a reputation for high quality paint application. The efforts paid off as the Medium Red, (AKA Candy Apple Red on the Shelby's), is definitely the deep end of the pool. For each corner we see 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and like new tires.
Interior
Tall back white vinyl buckets are seen in front, and a 2 plus 2 bench stretches across the rear of the interior cabin. All vinyl seats and door panels appear in good plus condition with no tears or wear showing and some slight yellowing. Fronting the seats is a NOS dash top all looking great framing a dual eyebrow design wood dash for the front of the passengers. An AM/FM radio, clock and center console are all in. White molded door panels with their wood appliqu inserts, and a peppering of chromed edging actuator and window crank are all pristine. Also, a white tonneau covering trims out the cabin when the top is in the down position. Hurst provides the manual T handle shifter in the console.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and squeezed into the restored engine bay is a purple people eater painted 351ci Cleveland V8 4V engine with an RV cam installed for greater performance. There is a new single 4-barrel carb under the purple painted air cleaner covering, and the original 3-speed manual was replaced by a rebuilt 4-speed manual Toploader. On back Trac-Lok was added by our restorer/consigner and we now have a 9-inch 3.25 rear axle. Nicely done.
Undercarriage
As we noted about the ubiquitous rust Mustangs are famous for, our consigner did some work here to eradicate it. This in the form of new floors, new torque boxes, rt. inner rocker, and rt. trunk floor. After said repairs the entire surfaces were coated with roll on Rustoleum paint. A few other upgrades include power disc brokers for the front and a shiny exhaust system is now on. Coil springs are on the front and leaf springs are on the rear.
Drive-Ability
I hopped in with wild eyed anticipation as I love these early pre gas crisis Mustangs with their long hoods and snazzy updated looks. She fired right up and on the test track had great acceleration, smooth steering, rail like handling, and bias free panic stopping. All functions were working very nicely but the new carb could use a professional tune up.
After the first owner had a fender bender accident they parked it in a garage for 12 years, when our consigner snapped it up. It took several years to assemble all the parts and at this time the restoration began in earnest. Now we have a turn the key car in a turn your onlookers heads condition. One good turn deserves another!
