Shelby and Mustang, 2 American icons. Prior to 1965, Shelby had become a legend with its track-dominating 289 Cobra. The Shelby line-up changed forever when Ford and Lee Iacocca unveiled their all-new pony car, the Mustang. Introduced in April of 1964, the Mustang was a smash hit and completely changed the American performance car landscape. Not far after the unveiling, Shelby and Ford joined forces to enhance their recently born horse. Named the Shelby GT350, this Mustang was the ultimate street version of what Ford had to offer. Increased horsepower, front disc brakes, and a fantastic appearance package set the GT350 apart from the standard Mustang GT.
During the first 3 years of the GT350, the 289 C.I. V8 remained the powerplant but new colors, options, and an available automatic transmission were added, helping increase the total sales numbers. In 1968, Ford’s 302 V8 was chosen as the new engine to replace the 289. Even though the 302 wasn’t as powerful, the addition of an aluminum Cobra intake and Holley 600 cfm carburetor still made the 1968 GT350 a stout performer. In 1968, a total of 1,253 Fastback GT350’s left the factory with only 224 of them being Hertz Rental cars. This particular fastback, Shelby 01219, was one of the few cars ordered by Hertz but was taken into private hands before it had a chance to be rented.
The same owner who purchased the car in 1968 kept the car until 2019, adding less than 23,000 miles over its lifetime. This car has been extremely well cared for and preserved over the last 5 decades, as it remains in unrestored condition boasting its original Candyapple Red paint, Saddle interior, and numbers matching drivetrain. Of recent, the original fuel pump, factory air conditioning unit, carburetor, water pump, radiator and master cylinder were taken off and internally rebuilt. Included with the Shelby is a Marti report, Shelby Historical papers, owner’s manual, and the original build sheet.
